Welcome to Westmoor's required summer reading assignment This mandatory assignment will be a significant part of your grade.
- Make sure you take notes and write down important quotes to be prepared for a test that will be administered to all students the first week of school.
- You will also be asked to respond to a writing prompt assigned by your teacher upon your return.

Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight (2004 edition)

Part One:
For the book The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight, complete a double entry or dialectical journal (Quote & Response). Discuss the author's major theme, the writing that stands out and makes the work distinctive. What is your opinion on the topic or subject? Copy quotes that you think are particularly important or telling. Take risks with your thinking; read between the lines.
- Type only; no ink or pencil. Double space for the journal entry responses. Number your pages. Single space only for the quotes.
- Copy and respond to at least 6 quotes,but not more than 8; include the page number. The journal should be from 3 to 4 pages. Analyze; do not summarize.
- Quotes chosen should point to one of the important issues or major themes in the book.
- Students should not copy each other’s quotes. Be original; be individual.
- At least two quotes must be from the last one third of the book.
Part Two:
There will be an in-class assessment (essay, test, quiz, etc.) on the second book, Fast Food Nation, within the first 2 weeks of school.
